Oberstadt Landscapes Announces $10,000 Landscape Giveaway Winner

Oberstadt Landscapes & Nursery set out with a goal of providing a newly renovated landscape to one deserving Fox Valley area nonprofit, with the hope that a new landscape would create a welcoming environment to clients and visitors and improve the visibility of the selected non profit in the community.

To be considered for this giveaway, area nonprofits were asked to complete a grant application which was available through the Fox Valley Community Foundation. The grant applications were reviewed by the Oberstadt Landscapes and Nursery Team, and the winner was selected based on several criteria: the need for landscape improvements, the impact the improvements would have on the organization and surrounding community, and the organization’s mission and presence in the community.

The winner of the landscape giveaway was the Salvation Army’s Project Home, located at 105 S. Badger Ave in Appleton. Oberstadt Landscapes & Nursery chose this location because of the obvious need for landscape improvements on the property, as well as to show our support for Project Home’s mission of providing sustainable living. Project Home was also selected because of its location, which is very visible to traffic traveling to the downtown Appleton area. As a team, we felt that improvements to this location would spur a desire to update other properties along College Ave., making the downtown Appleton area a more attractive destination.

The construction for this project will begin on September 10th. The plans for this project includes a complete renovation of the building’s entrance, including plantings of low maintence perennials and shrubs, regrading existing turf to eliminate snow plowing issues, and adding a lannon stone details to highlight signage. In the back of the property a patio will be installed for the residents, and the lawn will be regraded to achieve positive drainage to direct water flow away from the building.

Oberstadt Landscapes & Nursery, Inc. is an award winning landscape design/build firm that has been serving the Fox Valley area with high quality gardens and landscapes since 1985; including custom design, installation, maintenance, and specialty landscapes of unique outdoor environments.  OLN also offers a beautiful park-like Garden & Outdoor Living Center featuring retail sales of unique plant material, exclusive garden art, patio furniture and select outdoor living products.

Soil Amendments for Success

With the planting season on its way, now is the time to think about soil quality as you begin to plan new planting beds or update existing ones. Providing plants with the right kind of soil is the first step to success.  Clay soil can post problems when it comes to plants receiving enough oxygen, nutrients and drainage.  Sandy soil doesn’t hold on to nutrients or water long enough for the plants to be able to take them up all season.  Amendments can help to enrich the soil and mitigate the negative effects of clay or sand.  We recommend an amended soil depth of 8-12 inches.  In order to properly amend soil, you should mix in one bale of peat moss or compost and two bags of cocoa bean hulls for every 125 square feet of bed with a tiller.

More plants grow well in sandy soil than in clay soil.  A good perennial for clay soil is Amsonia, or Blue Star.  Clusters of sky blue flowers bloom in spring, and in the fall, the leaves turn golden yellow.  Two great shrubs for clay soil are Chokeberry and Ninebark.  Chokeberries prefer to grow in full sun, but tolerate shade.  The white flowers bloom in May, and red or black berries emerge in late summer.  They get an orange-red fall color.  Ninebarks have a maroon leaf all season and are off-set by the white clusters of flowers that bloom in June.  In fall the foliage turns a yellow-orange color.  By following these easy steps, your plants will flourish for years to come!
